Roberto Martinez will step down as Portugal coach after the World Cup – See why
Portugal head coach Roberto Martinez has decided to step down from his position upon the expiration of his contract at the conclusion of the 2026 World Cup, keeping his options open for a return to either club or international management.
Portugal manager Roberto Martinez will step down from his position following the conclusion of the 2026 World Cup, regardless of the team’s ultimate tournament performance.
The 52-year-old Spaniard has reportedly decided not to renew his current contract with the Portuguese Football Federation. His deal is officially set to expire upon the tournament’s conclusion at the end of July.
Ahead of Portugal’s opening group-stage fixture against the Democratic Republic of Congo, Martinez remains completely aligned with the federation to maintain strict focus on their upcoming tournament campaign.
Looking beyond this summer, the veteran tactician is highly interested in a return to the Premier League. However, he also remains completely open to accepting another prominent international coaching position.
