FIFA ignores past Portugal protest with controversial all-Argentine Ref crew
FIFA faces mounting criticism for appointing an exclusively Argentine refereeing crew for the France-Morocco quarter-final, repeating and escalating a controversial pattern that previously drew formal protests from Portugal in 2022.
FIFA is under fire after appointing an all-Argentine officiating crew for the upcoming France versus Morocco quarter-final, according to Goal.com and team reports.
The decision escalates a historical grievance; during the 2022 tournament in Doha, Portugal formally queried FIFA’s choice to use Argentine referee Facundo Tello for their knockout game against Morocco.
Though Portugal’s complaint was rejected and they subsequently lost, the exact same referee and nationality concerns have resurfaced, only now every single official is Argentine.
While FIFA maintains these appointments are strictly based on merit, critics argue Argentina is not a neutral party as the defending champions could face the winner of this match in the final. The decision feeds into a growing pattern of tournament criticism.
Egypt previously raised concerns over refereeing following their 3-2 defeat, and UEFA has placed the Folarin Balogun decision on record as both unprecedented and unjustifiable. Despite past warnings, governing officials have doubled down on the policy.
