Rafa Marquez takes over as El Tri boss as Aguirre steps down
The Mexican Football Federation has officially named former legendary defender Rafael Márquez as the new head coach of the national team, succeeding Javier Aguirre following their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign.
The Mexican Football Federation confirmed Wednesday that Rafael Márquez has officially taken over as the new head coach of the men’s national team.
Márquez, a legendary former El Tri defender who captained his country at five World Cups, steps into the role to spearhead the team’s long-term development strategy ahead of the 2030 tournament cycle.
The appointment cements a pre-planned succession strategy mapped out by federation officials well ahead of this summer’s tournament.
Márquez replaces veteran manager Javier Aguirre, who formally concluded his third distinct managerial stint with the national team on Sunday following a tightly contested 3-2 elimination loss against England in the World Cup Round of 16.
