Why Man United have given up a chuck of Greenwood windfall
Mason Greenwood’s transfer from Marseille to Fenerbahce will hand Manchester United a sizeable financial boost through a sell-on clause, although part of the proceeds will be passed on to Getafe.
Manchester United are set to receive a significant financial boost after Mason Greenwood completed his permanent move from Marseille to Turkish side Fenerbahce.
The transfer, reportedly worth around €39 million (£33 million), activates a sell-on clause agreed when United sold the academy graduate to Marseille in 2024, with the Premier League club expected to receive more than £10 million from the deal.
However, United will not retain the full amount. Reports indicate Getafe are entitled to 20 per cent of United’s sell-on earnings under an agreement reached during Greenwood’s 2023-24 loan spell in Spain.
The transfer still represents pure profit under Premier League financial rules because Greenwood came through United’s academy. Reuters and other reports said Greenwood signed a four-year contract with Fenerbahce after scoring 48 goals in 81 matches across two seasons for Marseille.
