José Mourinho has revealed he agreed to replace Sir Alex Ferguson as Manchester United manager in 2013 before making a dramatic U-turn and returning to Chelsea.
The revelation features in Netflix’s new three-part documentary, Mourinho, which launches globally on August 11.
Mourinho had held meetings with United officials in Madrid and London after Ferguson informed him he would retire. Terms were reportedly agreed, but the Portuguese coach changed his mind within days.
Ferguson recalled Mourinho calling him in tears, saying: “Alex, I can’t take it. I’ve given my word to Chelsea and I’m not going to break my word.”
United subsequently appointed David Moyes as Ferguson’s successor, but his tenure lasted less than a year.
Mourinho eventually arrived at Old Trafford in 2016, winning the Europa League and League Cup in his first season and guiding United to second place in the Premier League the following campaign.
The revelation has revived debate over what might have happened had Mourinho succeeded Ferguson immediately.
United had viewed his experience and personality as valuable during a major transition, while sources believe he would have acted more decisively in the transfer market.
Mourinho ultimately left United in December 2018, while the club continued searching for stability after Ferguson’s departure.
