Ronald Araújo joins Liverpool on loan with €55m buy option from Barcelona
Liverpool have completed the season-long loan signing of Barcelona defender Ronald Araújo, with a €55 million option to make the transfer permanent.
Liverpool have confirmed the signing of Barcelona defender Ronald Araújo on a season-long loan, with the agreement including a €55 million option to buy.
The Reds will cover 100 per cent of the Uruguay international’s salary, while no loan fee is involved. The 27-year-old has reportedly accepted a pay cut to secure regular first-team football.
Araújo arrives as Liverpool respond to a growing defensive injury crisis. Joe Gomez has suffered a muscle injury during pre-season, while teenage defender Giovanni Leoni continues his recovery from an ACL injury.
Jeremy Jacquet has also been sidelined, leaving Virgil van Dijk as the only fully fit senior centre-back.
The Uruguayan offers versatility and experience, having made more than 140 appearances for Barcelona and recently served as the club’s captain.
His ability to operate at centre-back and right-back gives Liverpool additional options, while the €55m clause allows the club to assess his impact before deciding on a permanent transfer.
Liverpool still retain faith in their wider defensive group, with Van Dijk and Gomez remaining important to the squad. Jacquet is expected back in first-team training soon, while Leoni is nearing the final stages of rehabilitation.
Youngsters Ifeanyi Ndukwe and Mor Ndiaye are also regarded as prospects, meaning Araújo provides immediate cover without necessarily blocking the club’s long-term plans.
