Former Chelsea doctor Eva Carneiro has criticised José Mourinho and John Terry after the pair revisited the controversy surrounding her departure from the club in a new Netflix documentary.
Carneiro responded publicly after Mourinho defended his actions during Chelsea’s 2-2 draw with Swansea City in August 2015.
The dispute began when Carneiro and physiotherapist Jon Fearn entered the pitch to treat Eden Hazard late in the match.
Chelsea had already lost goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois to a red card, meaning Hazard’s temporary departure left Mourinho’s side with fewer players during the closing stages. Mourinho strongly criticised the medical intervention.
In the documentary, Mourinho maintained that he believed Hazard was not seriously injured and argued that the medical staff should not have entered the field.
Terry, Chelsea’s captain at the time, also backed Mourinho’s account, saying players understood that medical staff would only intervene when an injury was considered severe.
Carneiro rejected their recollections, insisting referee Michael Oliver had called the medical team onto the pitch and that Hazard had requested assistance.
She also challenged Terry to understand the professional obligations governing medical personnel, arguing that her duty was to assess the player when summoned by the referee.
The controversy eventually led to Carneiro leaving Chelsea, after which she pursued legal action against the club and Mourinho. The dispute was settled privately in 2016, with Chelsea issuing an apology.
More than a decade later, the Netflix documentary has brought one of the most contentious episodes of Mourinho’s Chelsea career back into the spotlight.
