Leo Messi’s penalty woes continue as Nashville humble Inter Miami 4-1
Lionel Messi endured another frustrating night from the penalty spot as Nashville SC swept Inter Miami aside 4-1 to strengthen their position at the top of the Eastern Conference.
Lionel Messi endured another frustrating night as Inter Miami suffered a heavy 4-1 defeat to Nashville SC in a clash between the top two teams in the MLS Eastern Conference.
Messi had a chance to bring Miami level from the penalty spot in the 23rd minute, but Nashville goalkeeper Brian Schwake saved his effort, extending the Argentine’s run to three consecutive missed penalties.
Nashville had taken the lead through Andy Najar before Telasco Segovia restored parity for Miami shortly before half-time, with Messi providing the assist.
However, the hosts took control after the break as Hany Mukhtar scored twice, while Sam Surridge also found the net to complete a convincing victory.
Nashville remained top of the Eastern Conference after the result, while Miami suffered their third successive defeat.
The result was particularly disappointing for Messi, who also had a goal ruled out and saw another effort hit both posts during a difficult evening in Tennessee.
Despite the setback, the Inter Miami captain remained involved in his team’s only goal and will now look to help the Herons respond when they travel to Philadelphia.
