FIFA hands Leandro Paredes 10-match ban for World Cup final melee
Leandro Paredes has been handed a 10-match international suspension after FIFA ruled against his involvement in the confrontation that followed Argentina’s World Cup final defeat to Spain.
Leandro Paredes has been hit with a 10-match international suspension by FIFA following the ugly scenes that marred Argentina’s 2026 World Cup final defeat to Spain, with the disciplinary ruling delivering one of the strongest punishments from the tournament.
The Boca Juniors midfielder was found responsible for his role in the confrontation that erupted after Spain secured a 1-0 victory, resulting in a $90,000 fine alongside the lengthy ban.
Argentina defender Nahuel Molina was also punished with a seven-match suspension and the same financial penalty, while Spain midfielder Gavi and Argentina’s Thiago Almada were each given one-match bans.
Argentina assistant coach Roberto Ayala received a three-match suspension. FIFA also imposed a $321,000 fine on the Argentine Football Association, covering several breaches including team misconduct, discriminatory behaviour and the use of a football event for a non-sporting demonstration.
Part of the financial punishment will be directed towards an anti-discrimination programme, while Argentina have been ordered to restrict attendance for their next two home matches, although one of those sanctions has been suspended.
The disciplinary action follows FIFA’s investigation into the post-match confrontation at the New York New Jersey Stadium, which overshadowed Spain’s triumph and generated significant criticism.
Paredes’ suspension will apply only to Argentina’s international fixtures, meaning his club career remains unaffected.
The severity of the punishment underlines FIFA’s determination to take a firm stance against violent conduct and behaviour it considers damaging to the image of international football.
