Player Ratings: Yoane Wissa lead the way with 8/10 in Newcastle 2-2 Liverpool

Newcastle United and Liverpool shared the points after a dramatic 2-2 draw at St James’ Park, with the hosts twice moving ahead before Dominik Szoboszlai’s stoppage-time penalty denied Matthias Jaissle a winning Premier League debut.

Anthony Elanga put Newcastle in front before Cody Gakpo levelled for Liverpool, while Joe Willock restored the home side’s advantage in the second half.

Liverpool refused to give up and were rewarded deep into added time when Victor Munoz won a penalty, which Szoboszlai confidently converted.

Yoane Wissa was Newcastle’s most influential player, while Gakpo stood out for Liverpool with his attacking quality. Here is how the players performed.

Lukas Hornicek — 7/10: Produced several excellent saves, particularly against Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak. Looked composed and assured on his Premier League debut.

Amar Dedic — 7/10: Made a strong first appearance following his £30m arrival. Defended effectively and made a timely interception during a dangerous Liverpool attack.

Malick Thiaw — 7/10: Took responsibility with the captain’s armband and competed strongly throughout. His defensive work helped Newcastle cope with Liverpool’s pressure.

Sven Botman — 6/10: Looked more comfortable than during pre-season and made a crucial block. Could have reacted better when Liverpool scored their first equaliser.

Lewis Hall — 6/10: Defended competently for much of the match and showed good awareness inside his own box. His late challenge led to Liverpool’s penalty.

Lewis Miley — 7/10: Made an encouraging return after injury. His passing was impressive, with one excellent diagonal ball creating a dangerous Newcastle move.

Sean Steur — 7/10: Showed remarkable confidence for an 18-year-old making his Premier League debut. Positive in possession despite some misplaced passes.

Anthony Elanga — 7/10: Took his opportunity brilliantly, keeping his composure to find the bottom corner and give Newcastle an early advantage.

Yoane Wissa — 8/10: Newcastle’s most impressive player. Energetic and direct in the number 10 role, he created Willock’s goal with a superb run.

Harvey Barnes — 6/10: Offered some attacking energy and earned a dangerous free-kick but was unable to influence the game consistently.

William Osula — 7/10: Played an important part in Newcastle’s opening goal, carrying the ball forward before delivering the pass that released Elanga.

Jeremy Jacquet — 6/10: Comfortable in possession and showed excellent distribution but still needs greater defensive awareness at this level.

Virgil van Dijk — 6/10: Could have reacted earlier during Newcastle’s opening goal and was unable to prevent Willock from getting a shot away for the second.

Milos Kerkez — 4/10: Struggled against Elanga’s pace and picked up an early yellow card. Showed attacking intent but was vulnerable defensively.

Dominik Szoboszlai — 7/10: Had a relatively quiet game by his standards but showed tremendous composure to convert Liverpool’s late penalty.
