‘Enough Is Enough’: Gianni Infantino faces fresh revolt from football stars
Gianni Infantino is facing an increasingly difficult battle to retain support after prominent football figures joined growing calls for major change at FIFA.
Gianni Infantino’s position as FIFA president has come under renewed scrutiny after prominent current and former footballers joined growing calls for change within world football’s governing body.
Former Manchester United and France defender Mikael Silvestre was among the leading figures behind a strongly worded statement on Monday, declaring that “enough is enough” and arguing that football’s leadership has moved too far away from the interests of players and supporters.
France World Cup winner Emmanuel Petit and England international Lucy Bronze were also among those associated with the message, which called for greater consultation and accountability in major decisions affecting the sport.
The intervention comes at a particularly difficult moment for Infantino, who has faced sustained criticism over his abandoned proposal to involve private investors in FIFA’s commercial rights, including World Cup-related assets.
UEFA, the Asian Football Confederation and CONCACAF have separately criticised the plan, while discussions over a possible no-confidence move against the FIFA president have reportedly continued.
UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin has also ruled out challenging Infantino personally but believes another candidate could emerge before the March 2027 FIFA presidential election.
Infantino, meanwhile, remains determined to seek another term and retains significant support among several member associations, particularly outside Europe.
The latest intervention from football figures therefore adds another layer to an increasingly public leadership dispute that could shape FIFA’s direction in the months ahead.
