Reiss Nelson leaves Arsenal as free agent after contract termination
Reiss Nelson’s long association with Arsenal has ended after the winger mutually agreed to terminate his contract and become a free agent.
Reiss Nelson has ended his 18-year association with Arsenal after the club agreed to terminate his contract by mutual consent, bringing an end to a career that promised much but was repeatedly disrupted by injuries and limited opportunities.
The 26-year-old winger, who joined Arsenal’s academy as a youngster and made his senior debut under Arsene Wenger in 2017, is now free to negotiate with clubs in England and abroad.
Nelson had entered the final year of his Arsenal contract, with an additional extension option, but both parties decided that a permanent separation was the best solution.
His departure comes after another difficult loan spell at Brentford last season, where he made 13 appearances across competitions, scoring once and registering one assist, according to available statistical records.
He also had previous loan spells with Hoffenheim, Feyenoord and Fulham as he struggled to establish himself as a regular at the Emirates.
Nelson made 90 first-team appearances for Arsenal, scoring eight goals and providing nine assists, while also collecting an FA Cup winners’ medal in 2020 and featuring in Community Shield triumphs.
His most memorable moment came in March 2023 when he scored a dramatic late winner against Bournemouth during Arsenal’s title challenge. Despite that breakthrough moment, injuries and competition for places prevented him from building sustained momentum.
With Arsenal no longer expecting him to play a significant role, the club have sacrificed a potential transfer fee but removed his wages from the squad bill. Nelson will now assess offers before deciding on the next chapter of his career.
