Gabriel Jesus reveals why he took a pay cut to join Barcelona
Gabriel Jesus has explained his decision to join Barcelona, insisting that playing for the Catalan giants mattered more to him than maintaining his previous salary.
Gabriel Jesus has expressed his excitement after completing his €10 million move from Arsenal to Barcelona, revealing that he accepted a lower salary because his priority was to play for the Spanish giants and contribute to an already strong squad.
The 29-year-old Brazilian, who has signed a contract with Barcelona after becoming available late in the transfer window, was present at Camp Nou to watch his new teammates defeat Rayo Vallecano 5-2.
Jesus said the experience immediately strengthened his desire to get onto the pitch, while acknowledging the quality already within Hansi Flick’s team.
“I haven’t spoken with Flick about tactics yet. I don’t think I came to improve things because they’re already damn great. I came to help,” Jesus said.
He added: “I lowered my salary to be here, but for me, the important thing is to be able to play for Barça.” Reflecting on his first visit to Camp Nou, he said: “Yesterday, I watched the match at the Camp Nou, and it was my first time in that stadium. And while I was following the game, only positive thoughts were crossing my mind, as you know.”
He continued: “I was thinking about being out there on the field, playing and helping my teammates who possess immense quality.”
Barcelona’s move for Jesus followed their unsuccessful pursuit of Julián Álvarez, while Flick has described the Brazilian as a player who fits his tactical style.
