Antonio Rudiger retires from Germany NT at 33
Antonio Rüdiger has ended his Germany career at 33 after 86 international appearances, choosing to concentrate on his future with Real Madrid.
Antonio Rüdiger has announced his retirement from international football at the age of 33, bringing an end to a 12-year Germany career that saw the Real Madrid defender make 86 appearances for Die Mannschaft.
Rüdiger made his senior debut in 2014 and quickly established himself as a prominent figure in the national team, going on to represent Germany at three World Cups and three European Championships.
His international career included the disappointment of Germany’s early exits at several major tournaments, but also the significant achievement of winning the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup.
The Berlin-born centre-back scored three goals for his country and finishes his Germany career level with former goalkeeper Oliver Kahn and Andreas Brehme on 86 caps.
His decision comes as Germany enters a new era under head coach Jürgen Klopp following the 2026 World Cup, with Rüdiger opting to make way for younger defenders while turning his full attention towards club football.
Rüdiger has been an important figure at Real Madrid since joining from Chelsea in 2022 and has collected major honours with the Spanish giants, including the Champions League, La Liga and Club World Cup.
His departure leaves Klopp with an experienced defensive option removed from his plans as Germany begins rebuilding for the next international cycle.
Rüdiger’s international journey may not have ended with another major trophy, but his physical style, leadership and distinctive personality made him one of Germany’s most recognisable defenders of his generation.
His decision now marks the beginning of a new chapter focused entirely on extending his club career at the highest level.
