Folarin Balogun’s dramatic deadline-day move to Everton has collapsed after the Monaco striker decided against completing the transfer following concerns raised during his medical, bringing an extraordinary chain of events to an abrupt end.
Everton had reached an agreement with Monaco for the United States international, with the deal understood to be worth around £40 million before potential add-ons, and Balogun travelled to Merseyside to complete the formalities.
However, doubts emerged after Everton’s medical team flagged an issue, prompting discussions over the structure of the transfer and forcing both clubs back into negotiations.
Monaco CEO Thiago Scuro has since explained that the club’s medical staff and Balogun’s own doctors did not share Everton’s concerns, while further specialists were brought in to assess the player.
The situation ultimately changed Balogun’s feelings about the proposed move, with the forward deciding he was no longer comfortable committing his future to Everton.
The collapse is a major setback for Everton, who had already allowed Beto to leave for Fiorentina and were left scrambling for another attacking option.
Balogun, meanwhile, returns to Monaco after scoring 19 goals last season and establishing himself as an important figure for both club and country.
The 25-year-old has scored 31 goals in 91 appearances for Monaco since joining from Arsenal in 2023.
Although the major European windows have closed, Monaco could still explore a late departure to a club in a league where transfers remain possible.
