Jose Mourinho omits £47M star from Real Madrid’s Champions League squad
Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho has released his Champions League squad for the league phase, leaving out Ferland Mendy as the French defender continues his recovery from a serious thigh injury.
Real Madrid have omitted Ferland Mendy from their Champions League squad for the 2026/27 campaign as the French defender continues his recovery from injury.
The 31-year-old has been sidelined since suffering a tendon injury to the rectus femoris in his right leg towards the end of last season, with the problem requiring surgery in May.
Real Madrid’s official medical report confirmed that the £47 million signing from Lyon in 2019, underwent a successful operation before beginning his rehabilitation.
His absence from the European squad comes despite the club registering other players who are also recovering from injuries, including Eder Militao and Rodrygo.
According to reports from Spain, Mendy’s place on the 25-man List A has instead gone to new signing Sergio Martínez, who joined from Racing Santander.
The decision could indicate that Real Madrid are uncertain about Mendy’s availability during the league phase, although reports have suggested he could resume group training in September if his recovery continues positively.
Mendy’s omission also leaves José Mourinho with fewer experienced options at left-back, although the club have strengthened that position with Marc Cucurella and Álvaro Carreras.
Real Madrid will begin their Champions League campaign at home against Inter Milan next week, with Mourinho already dealing with several injury and suspension concerns.
The European squad decision therefore gives a clearer picture of the players the Portuguese coach expects to rely on during the opening phase of the competition.
For Mendy, another extended period away from competitive football represents a frustrating setback after a prolonged spell dealing with injuries.
His contract with Real Madrid remains in place, but his immediate priority is now completing his rehabilitation and returning to full fitness before pushing for a place in Mourinho’s plans.
