‘Saying no to Madrid isn’t easy’ – Rodri reveals why he rejected Real for Barcelona
Spanish midfielder Rodrigo Hernandez ‘Rodri’ has revealed that Barcelona’s sporting project and the influence of Hansi Flick and Deco ultimately convinced him to turn down Real Madrid.
Rodri has opened up about the difficult decision that saw him choose Barcelona over Real Madrid after both Spanish giants competed for his signature during the summer, with the Spain midfielder admitting that turning down the Madrid giants was far from straightforward.
The 30-year-old eventually left Manchester City after seven successful years and completed his return to Spain by joining Barcelona in a deal reported to be worth around £65.4 million, ending a transfer battle that had initially appeared to be leaning towards Real Madrid.
Speaking about the move, Rodri explained that his decision was driven primarily by football rather than emotion, as he wanted to join the project that offered him the best opportunity to continue developing and competing for major trophies.
He revealed that Barcelona sporting director Deco and head coach Hansi Flick played an important role in convincing him, while also praising the respect shown to him by Real Madrid during the negotiations.
Rodri made it clear that there was no bad blood with Madrid, describing the club’s treatment of him as excellent and acknowledging the quality of their coach and squad.
His decision has already begun to look significant for Barcelona, with the former Manchester City star quickly becoming an important figure in Flick’s midfield.
His arrival was seen as a major statement of intent from the Catalan club, particularly after his decorated spell at City, where he won the Champions League and multiple Premier League titles.
Barcelona’s strong start to the 2026/27 campaign has further increased expectations, while Rodri has also stressed that the team must improve its control and game management if it wants to finally overcome its recent Champions League disappointments.
