Todd Boehly’s Chelsea exit marks major change as Clearlake takes full control
Todd Boehly has ended his Chelsea ownership journey after selling his stake as Clearlake Capital assumes full control of the club.
Todd Boehly’s four-year association with Chelsea has come to an end after the American businessman sold his stake in the Premier League club, allowing Clearlake Capital to take full control of Stamford Bridge.
Boehly and fellow co-owner Mark Walter have agreed to sell their combined interest to Clearlake, in a transaction reported to be worth around £950 million.
The move brings an unexpected change to the ownership structure that was established in 2022, when Boehly and Clearlake joined forces to purchase Chelsea from Roman Abramovich in a deal valued at £4.25 billion.
Boehly subsequently became the public face of the ownership group and served as chairman, overseeing a period of significant investment in the club’s playing squad, academy and infrastructure.
He will now leave his position, while Swiss investor Hansjörg Wyss remains involved with the ownership group. Chelsea have stressed that the transition will not lead to changes in the club’s day-to-day operations, leadership or current strategy.
Clearlake’s co-founders Behdad Eghbali and José E. Feliciano have said the investment firm intends to continue developing the club’s infrastructure, sporting operations and player development.
Boehly, meanwhile, described his time as chairman as an honour and said he remained confident about Chelsea’s future under Clearlake.
The ownership change comes as Chelsea begin a new season under manager Xabi Alonso, with the club currently sitting sixth in the Premier League after four matches.
