Scottish brothers eye historic Uganda call-up after surprise international opportunity
Partick Thistle brothers Olly and Seb Fisher are pursuing a surprise international opportunity with Uganda through their mother’s birthplace.
Teenage brothers Olly and Seb Fisher are hoping their unexpected route into international football will take them from Scotland to Uganda, where they could be involved with the country’s youth teams.
The Partick Thistle youngsters became eligible through their mother, Kate, who was born in Uganda while their grandparents were living there.
Goalkeeper Olly, 18, has joined the Under-20 setup, while 16-year-old striker Seb has been involved with the Under-17s after the brothers were invited to training camps in August.
Their opportunity emerged after their father spoke with a football consultant at a match in Nigeria, with Uganda’s interest becoming known to the family several months later.
The brothers have since trained in Jinja and have spoken positively about their reception from teammates and coaches.
Uganda Under-20 coach Laryea Kingston, a former Hearts and Ghana midfielder, has told them they could make history if they eventually represent the country, although that claim has not been independently established.
The teenagers are already looking beyond the current camp, with Olly hoping to challenge for a place if Uganda qualify for next year’s Under-20 Africa Cup of Nations, while Seb could have an opportunity to feature at the Under-17 World Cup in November.
Both players believe the international experience could also aid their development when they return to Scotland and continue their careers with Partick Thistle.
