Mauro Icardi banned from driving until 2099 after Girlfriend’s viral car video
Mauro Icardi has been temporarily barred from driving in Argentina after authorities discovered his licence had expired, with the sanction listed as running until 2099 following a controversial video involving his partner.
Former Inter Milan and Paris Saint-Germain striker Mauro Icardi has been handed an extraordinary driving ban in Argentina after a social media video triggered an investigation into his licence status.
The 33-year-old, who is currently without a club after leaving Galatasaray, was behind the wheel of a car in a gated residential area when his partner, Eugenia “China” Suárez, removed her seatbelt and leaned a large part of her body through the vehicle’s window while it was moving.
The footage quickly attracted attention and prompted the Buenos Aires provincial authorities to check Icardi’s driving credentials. Officials subsequently found that his Argentine driving licence had expired, leading to a preventive suspension that is recorded as lasting until 2099.
The unusually distant date has drawn widespread attention, although reports indicate that the measure is preventive and that Icardi can seek a new licence after completing the required process rather than being permanently barred from driving for the remainder of his life.
Authorities also criticised the circumstances shown in the video, arguing that the passenger’s actions created a safety risk for herself, other occupants and third parties, while Icardi remained responsible for the vehicle.
Icardi, however, has disputed the authorities’ position and questioned why his Italian driving licence, which he says remains valid until 2029, was not accepted. He also criticised the transport authorities on social media and urged them to concentrate on improving Argentina’s roads.
According to reports, Icardi was expected to have converted or registered his European licence locally several years ago, creating the dispute over whether he was legally authorised to drive in Argentina.
The incident adds another unexpected chapter to a turbulent period for the Argentine forward, whose immediate future in football remains uncertain as he searches for a new club.
