Man City launch appeal against Premier League guilty verdict over financial doping
Manchester City have formally appealed their guilty verdict over Premier League financial breaches, opening a new stage in a case that could still lead to sanctions.
Manchester City have formally appealed the independent commission’s guilty verdict in the Premier League’s long-running financial case, challenging findings covering alleged rule breaches between 2009-10 and 2017-18.
The club says the ruling contains significant errors and maintains that evidence supporting its position was not properly reflected.
The Premier League confirmed that City lodged the appeal with the chair of its Judicial Panel on Thursday, ahead of Friday’s deadline.
What Man City are challenging
The independent commission found City guilty of serious financial-rule breaches and concluded that commercial arrangements had artificially affected the club’s reported finances by more than £900m.
The Premier League said the commission also found breaches relating to the club’s cooperation with its investigation.
City continue to reject the allegations and are seeking to overturn the findings through the appeal process.
Sanctions remain unresolved
No punishment has yet been announced.
Under the Premier League process, sanctions will be considered separately, with possible measures including fines, points deductions and other sporting penalties.
The appeal will be heard privately by an independent three-member Appeal Board, which has the authority to uphold, overturn or vary the original decision.
The outcome will determine how the case progresses before any final sporting consequences are established.
FA monitoring developments
The Football Association has also said the verdict has “significant implications” for the integrity of the game and is assessing its consequences.
The FA has not announced separate action, stressing that proceedings between City and the Premier League remain ongoing.
