Falcons wasteful, but take control of Olympics qualifiers ahead of Comoros secondleg with 2-0 win
The Super Falcons secured a 2-0 first-leg victory over Comoros in the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics qualifiers, with second-half goals from Michelle Alozie and Uchenna Kanu despite wasting several chances.
The Super Falcons of Nigeria established a 2-0 first-leg win over Comoros in the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics qualifiers, thanks to second-half goals from Michelle Alozie and Uchenna Kanu at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne, Ogun State, Nigeria.
Nigeria headed into the game looking to make up for their disappointing Women’s Africa Cup of Nations campaign, where their early exit and playoff defeat to South Africa ended their chances of making it to the next FIFA Women’s World Cup.
Playing as the home side in the first leg, Les Coelacantes started the game as the underdogs and were kept inside their own half for the majority of the first half, far different from the team that defeated Sudan 30-0 over two legs in the previous round of the qualifiers.
Nigeria managed to carve out a host of big chances, with captain Rasheedat Ajibade hitting the woodwork, while Michelle Alozie missed two opportunities as the Falcons desperately searched for the breakthrough in the first half.
The goal eventually came two minutes after the restart through Alozie, who fired home from the centre of the box following a headed pass to give Austin Eguavoen’s team a long-overdue lead.
Uchenna Kanu then doubled the lead on the hour mark, heading home from a corner kick to seal a 2-0 victory and leave Nigeria well placed to reach the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles ahead of the second leg in Ikenne on Tuesday.
