'England put Kane in defence' – Trump questions Tuchel's tactics in Argentina loss

Published Entry Strategy Track — 18-JUL-2026

England’s recent loss to Argentina was always going to cause a stir, but nobody expected the loudest criticism to come from former US President Donald Trump. Following the defeat, Trump openly questioned the tactical decisions of England’s manager, Thomas Tuchel. His main point of confusion was why Harry Kane, one of the best strikers in the world, seemed to be playing so far back in his own half. While the critique might sound unusual coming from a political figure, it highlights a very real frustration felt by many England fans after a disappointing performance.

At the heart of the debate is Tuchel’s tactical setup during the match. Kane is famous for his ability to drop deep into midfield to help build up play, but against Argentina, he spent far too much time near his own penalty area. Whether this was a deliberate plan by Tuchel to help a struggling defense or just a result of Argentina’s constant pressure, it left England completely empty up front. With their star goalscorer stuck defending, England had no real outlet to launch counter-attacks, making it easy for the Argentine defenders to control the game.

Trump’s direct way of speaking often cuts through complicated sports talk, and in this case, his simple observation matched what many football pundits were thinking. Tactical plans can get highly complicated, but the basic rule of putting your best goalscorer near the opponent’s goal remains true. By pulling Kane back, Tuchel tried to solve a defensive problem but ended up creating a much bigger attacking issue. The decision took away England’s biggest threat and allowed Argentina to dictate the pace of the match without any fear.

This loss shows the intense pressure Tuchel will face in his new role. When tactical choices are being debated on the global stage by people outside of the sport, the spotlight is officially as hot as it gets. To move forward, the manager will need to find a better balance. He must figure out how to make England defensively solid without wasting the attacking talents of players like Kane. If he cannot get his best players into their correct positions, more defeats and even stranger criticisms are sure to follow.
