Folarin Balogun opened the scoring just before halftime. However, the striker was later dismissed with a straight red card following a controversial video assistant referee review.
Despite playing the final 26 minutes with ten men, Mauricio Pochettino’s side displayed immense character.
Midfielder Malik Tillman consolidated the victory in the 82nd minute, curling a sensational direct free-kick into the top corner.
The triumph marks the Americans’ first World Cup knockout stage win in 24 years, setting up a highly anticipated clash against Belgium in Seattle.
