Super Eagles-Eligible Josh Ogunnaike earns Arsenal first-team call-up ahead of Bayern clash
Josh Ogunnaike, who remains eligible to represent Nigeria’s Super Eagles, trained with Arsenal’s senior squad as manager Mikel Arteta assesses defensive options ahead of their Champions League tie against Bayern Munich.
Highly-rated defender Josh Ogunnaike was drafted into Arsenal’s first-team training session on Tuesday ahead of their upcoming UEFA Champions League fixture against German giants Bayern Munich.
The 18-year-old left-back impressed manager Mikel Arteta during his recent performances in the club’s development setup, which included a goal in the UEFA Youth League against LOSC Lille.
Ogunnaike, who signed his first professional contract with the North London club following 40 academy appearances across various competitions, offers primary cover on the left flank.
His inclusion provides the coaching staff with additional tactical depth alongside Colombian international Piero Hincapié as the Gunners finalize their matchday preparations.
Though born in England and a product of the Gunners’ academy system since age 13, the versatile full-back qualifies to represent Nigeria at the international level through his parentage.
Should he choose to commit his international future to Nigeria, the teenage prospect could emerge as a valuable long-term option for the Super Eagles setup as he continues his transition into senior European football.
