Top 10 Youngest FIFA World Cup Goalscorers
10. Julian Green of the United States vs. Belgium
- 19 years & 25 day

After Belgium took an early 2-0 lead in the first half of extra time in their round of 16 clash in 2014, U.S. manager Jürgen Klinsmann burned his final substitution in the 105th minute, handing Green his World Cup debut.
It took the teenager less than two minutes on the pitch to make an impact in the 107th minute, volleying home a beautiful strike that places him in the list of the youngest FIFA World Cup goalscorers, even though it wasn’t enough to turn the game around.
9. Lionel Messi of Argentina vs. Serbia & Montenegro
- 18 years & 357 days

During the 2006 World Cup, Argentina manager José Pékerman subbed on a long-haired wonderkid onto the pitch in the 75th minute to make his tournament debut, replacing Maxi Rodríguez. That kid was Lionel Messi.
With his 19th birthday approaching, Messi took the opportunity presented, assisted the fourth three minutes after coming on, then scored to complete a 6-0 rout, becoming the sixth-youngest FIFA World Cup goalscorer at the time.
8. Lamine Yamal of Spain vs. Saudi Arabia
- 18 years & 343 days

Just 10 minutes into his first-ever FIFA World Cup start, Lamine Yamal arrived at the back post to guide home Mikel Oyarzabal’s low cross to put Spain ahead in their second group game of the 2026 edition, becoming the eighth youngest World Cup goalscorer in the process.
He also became the second-youngest player to open the scoring in a FIFA World Cup game, with only Brazilian legend Pelé doing so at a younger age of 17. Yamal’s goal was also Spain’s first of the tournament, having been held by Cape Verde in their opening game.
7. Dmitri Sychev of Russia vs. Belgium
- 18 years & 231 days

Dmitri Sychev’s goal against Belgium in the 2002 World Cup was an incredibly sharp, well-timed, clinical finish from the then 18-year-old prodigy, who had been dubbed the Russian Michael Owen.
The goal, which came in the 88th minute, was the final in a five-goal thriller that ended in a 3-2 defeat to Belgium, a loss that subsequently ended their outing, but it did make Sychev one of the youngest FIFA World Cup goalscorers.
6. Nicolae Kovacs of Romania vs. Peru
- 18 years & 197 days

In their first-ever World Cup game, Romania were down to nine men due to injuries, and were able to take a 2-1 lead after their opponent Peru were reduced to 10 men following the sending off of captain Plácido Galindo.
In the 89th minute, Romania launched an attack and managed to find Kovács waiting in the box. The 18-year-old forward safely put away the low cross to beat the Peruvian goalkeeper, Juan Valdivieso, becoming the youngest FIFA World Cup goalscorer at the time.
5. Michael Owen of England vs. Romania
- 18 years & 190 days

England manager Glenn Hoddle brought on 18-year-old Michael Owen off the bench in the 72nd minute to replace Teddy Sheringham, with England trailing 1–0 against Romania in their second group game in 1998.
Seven minutes later, Michael Owen scored to restore parity, becoming the fourth youngest FIFA World Cup goalscorer at the time, but he has now moved down to fifth — England would go on to lose the match 2-1. It took Owen just seven minutes to make an impact.
4. Ibrahim Mbaye of Senegal vs. France
- 18 years & 142 days

In one of the most breathtaking second-half performances in the 2026 edition, Senegal lost 3-1 to France in their opening group game, but Ibrahim Mbaye seized the opportunity to place himself in the history books after coming on in the game.
The youngster beat Lucas Hernandez brilliantly before firing a ferocious shot past Mike Maignan to make it 2-1, becoming the fourth youngest FIFA World Cup goalscorer, although Kylian Mbappé scored moments later to seal a 3-1 France win.
3. Gavi of Spain vs. Costa Rica
- 18 years & 110 days

Gavi became Spain’s youngest player in a FIFA World Cup match when he started their first game at the 2022 edition against Costa Rica, and repaid the trust of coach Luis Enrique with a brilliant debut, which got even better in the final quarter of the match.
The youngster, set up by Alvaro Morata, scored the fifth goal in a 7-0 victory, becoming the third youngest FIFA World Cup goalscorer as a result.
It would be Spain’s only win of the tournament as they could only win one more point in the group phase, before losing out to Morocco on penalties in the round of 16, which was the first round of the knockout stages at the time.
2. Manuel Rosas of Mexico vs. Argentina
- 18 years & 93 days

Manuel Rosas is the second youngest FIFA World Cup goalscorer.
Manuel Rosas made history as the first player to score a penalty at the FIFA World Cup when he converted from 12 yards against Argentina to give Mexico a slight hope in a match they went on to lose 6-3.
That goal made him the youngest FIFA World Cup goalscorer, overtaking a previous record set by Nicolae Kovacs five days earlier, although he also scored Mexico’s second from a penalty rebound in the second half.
He now ranks as the second youngest FIFA World Cup goalscorer, with just one player beating his record of almost a century.
Who is the Youngest FIFA World Cup Goalscorer?
1. Pelé of Brazil vs. Wales
- 17 years & 239 days

Pelé is the youngest FIFA World Cup goalscorer.
Youngster Pelé was given a historic start in Brazil’s quarter-final meeting with Wales at the 1958 edition, and he ended up providing the decisive moment that justified his selection, sending the South Americans into the semi-finals.
With the game locked at 0-0 inside the final 30 minutes, Pelé received a pass inside the penalty box with his back to the goal, controlled with his chest to skip past his marker, before scuffing a low volley past the diving Welsh goalkeeper Jack Kelsey.
He became the youngest FIFA World Cup goalscorer, surpassing Manuel Rosas’s record, set against Argentina exactly 28 years apart.
