Per Mertesacker takes over as DFB Director of Sport until 2030
Per Mertesacker has agreed to succeed Andreas Rettig as the DFB’s Geschäftsführer Sport starting in January 2027, signing a contract that runs through the 2030 World Cup.
Per Mertesacker is set to sign a landmark agreement with the German Football Association (DFB), stepping into the role of Geschäftsführer Sport.
The 2014 World Cup winner will officially succeed Andreas Rettig, taking charge starting in January 2027 with a contract stretching through the 2030 World Cup.
Although his appointment coincides with the high-profile presentation of incoming national team coach Jürgen Klopp in Frankfurt, Mertesacker will not be in attendance.
Having recently concluded his extensive tenure overseeing Arsenal’s youth academy, the former central defender brings deep developmental expertise to shape Germany’s long-term footballing hierarchy.
