Tanzania recorded a landmark 2-1 victory over defending champions South Africa in their opening Women’s Africa Cup of Nations match in Casablanca, earning the country’s first-ever win in the competition.
Diana Msewa gave Tanzania a surprise lead after finishing an assist from Asha Rashid Mlangwa, putting Banyana Banyana under early pressure.
South Africa responded just before the interval when Bambanani Mbane equalized in the second minute of first-half stoppage time after Tanzania failed to clear a corner, sending the teams into the break level.
The match remained closely contested in the second half before Hasnath Ubamba restored Tanzania’s advantage with only three minutes of normal time remaining, calmly converting a pass from Donisia Minja.
South Africa pushed for another equalizer in the closing stages, but Tanzania defended resolutely to secure a memorable victory and one of the biggest upsets of the tournament.
Tanzania moves to the summit of Group B, ahead of the game between Burkina Faso and Ivory Coast.
