Chawinga sisters inspire historic Malawi win over Super Falcons on WAFCON debut

Malawi produced one of the biggest shocks in Women’s Africa Cup of Nations history by defeating record champions Nigeria 3-2 in their tournament debut.

Malawi delivered one of the greatest upsets in Women’s Africa Cup of Nations history as the debutants defeated nine-time champions Nigeria 3-2 in a thrilling Group C encounter in Rabat.

The Scorchers showed early intent and even had a first-half goal by Tabitha Chawinga disallowed before making their pressure count after the break.

Temwa Chawinga gave Malawi a shock lead in the 69th minute from Ireen Khumalo’s assist, and Tabitha doubled the advantage five minutes later after being set up by Sabinah Thom.

Nigeria responded when captain Rashidat Ajibade converted a penalty, but Temwa struck again from Benadetta Mkandawire’s pass to restore Malawi’s two-goal cushion.

Uchenna Kanu reduced the deficit late on, but the Super Falcons could not complete a comeback. The victory marked Malawi’s first-ever WAFCON match and instantly became a landmark moment in the country’s football history.

Super Falcons now face must win match against Zambia in their second game, lest they exit the tournament from the group stage for the first time ever, while Malawi have a debut to remember on the continent.
