Group B Sealed: Ivory Coast and South Africa progress to face Algeria and Morocco in the quarters
Ivory Coast and South Africa have both secured places in the WAFCON quarterfinals after topping Group B, setting up meetings with Algeria and hosts Morocco respectively.
Ivory Coast confirmed their place among Africa’s emerging women’s football forces with a 2-1 win over Tanzania in Casablanca, finishing top of Group B.
Safi Ouedraogo and Inès Konan scored for the Elephants at the Larbi Zaouli Stadium, sending Ivory Coast through to a quarterfinal against Algeria, scheduled for Saturday in Casablanca.
South Africa joined them in the last eight courtesy of a 1-0 victory over Burkina Faso, with Thembi Kgatlana’s first-half strike proving decisive.
Banyana Banyana will now face hosts Morocco in Rabat, a repeat of the 2022 final, which South Africa won on their way to becoming continental champions.
Tanzania’s exit ends a promising campaign that had begun with a shock win over South Africa. Diana Msewa’s 99th-minute penalty proved a mere consolation as Reynold Pedros’s side went down fighting, having failed to register a shot on target until deep into stoppage time in Casablanca.
