Thai footballer Sofwan Awae has died after being struck by lightning during a regional football match in southern Thailand.
The 24-year-old collapsed after a lightning bolt hit the pitch during injury time of the Golok FA Cup clash between Samcolts and Abu x Nong Sirin at Santipap Stadium in Narathiwat province.
Heavy rain had engulfed the match when lightning struck near the players, forcing the fixture to an abrupt halt. Emergency responders and teammates attempted to revive Awae before he was taken to hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Reports also confirmed that between nine and 12 other players sustained injuries in the incident.Awae had recently signed for Thai League 3 side Yala FC after previously representing Pattani FC.
The club paid tribute to the winger, offering condolences to his family following the tragedy. One of the injured players, a Malaysian footballer, was later transferred home for further medical treatment.
The Golok FA Cup is a regional competition featuring clubs from Thailand’s southern border provinces and neighbouring Malaysia.
Police confirmed the fatality and said emergency medical teams responded immediately, but Awae succumbed to the severe injuries caused by the lightning strike.
The incident has renewed attention on weather safety protocols at outdoor sporting events, particularly during Southeast Asia’s monsoon season when thunderstorms are frequent.
Football authorities are expected to review the circumstances surrounding the match as tributes continue to pour in for the young player.
