Marli Salmon signs first professional contract with Arsenal on 17th birthday
Arsenal have rewarded teenage defender Marli Salmon with his first professional contract after his rapid progression from Hale End to the first team.
Arsenal have secured the future of highly rated academy defender Marli Salmon after the teenager signed his first professional contract on his 17th birthday, marking another significant step in his rapid development at the club.
Salmon joined Arsenal’s academy as a nine-year-old and has progressed through the age groups before breaking into the senior setup.
His rise accelerated last season when he became the youngest Arsenal player to make his debut in a European competition, featuring against Club Brugge in the Champions League at 16 years and 103 days.
The versatile defender, capable of playing at centre-back or right-back, made four competitive appearances for the first team during the 2025/26 campaign and also gained valuable experience training alongside Mikel Arteta’s senior squad.
Arsenal had already agreed a pre-contract arrangement with Salmon earlier in the year, with the formal professional deal scheduled for his 17th birthday.
His development has attracted attention because of how quickly he has adapted to senior football despite his age, while his versatility provides another option for Arsenal as the club continues to develop players internally.
Salmon’s breakthrough also reflects the increasing opportunities being created for Hale End graduates, with Arsenal increasingly willing to expose their best young players to first-team football.
Having already experienced Champions League football before turning 17, the defender now enters the next stage of his career with a professional contract secured and greater expectations surrounding his development.
Arsenal will hope the agreement provides the foundation for Salmon to establish himself as another successful product of the club’s academy and eventually become a regular member of the senior squad.
