Sweet revenge in Poland as Ruben Amorim destroys Man United and Michael Carrick
Ruben Amorim enjoyed a memorable return to face Manchester United as AC Milan twice came from behind to defeat Michael Carrick’s side 4-2 in Poland.
Manchester United could not escape the shadow of former manager Ruben Amorim as AC Milan produced a stunning second-half comeback to beat Michael Carrick’s side 4-2 in their final pre-season friendly in Poland on Saturday.
The result gave Amorim his first victory as Milan manager and added another twist to the Portuguese coach’s complicated relationship with United, having been replaced by Carrick earlier this year.
United appeared in control after Harry Maguire headed them in front almost immediately, but Milan gradually settled and Samuel Chukwueze restored parity before the interval.
Patrick Dorgu then restored United’s advantage early in the second half, but that was where Carrick’s team began to unravel.
Milan responded with three goals in just 14 minutes, with Alphadjo Cisse equalising before Goncalo Ramos completed the turnaround and Ruben Loftus-Cheek added a fourth.
Chukwueze was central to Milan’s recovery, scoring once and providing two assists, while Ramos also delivered an influential performance with a goal and two assists.
Milan goalkeeper Lorenzo Torriani further frustrated United by saving Bruno Fernandes’ penalty when the score was 1-1.
For Carrick, the defeat provides a worrying final note to United’s preparations despite an encouraging pre-season campaign that has included victories over Atletico Madrid and Leeds and a draw against Paris Saint-Germain.
United now turn their attention to their Premier League opener against Hull City, while Amorim can take confidence from a comeback victory that will inevitably be viewed as a particularly satisfying one against his former club.
