Barcelona could face disciplinary consequences after LaLiga reported five incidents involving offensive and politically charged chants during their 2-0 home victory over Athletic Club.

Barcelona have been placed under disciplinary scrutiny after LaLiga reported five incidents involving supporters during Thursday’s 2-0 victory over Athletic Club at Camp Nou, with the controversy extending beyond the result of the club’s first home league match of the season.

The report, which has been referred to the relevant disciplinary authorities, centres on chants directed at Spain and the national team, as well as further insults aimed at the National Police and Atletico Madrid.

The incidents occurred against a politically charged backdrop following a recent confrontation involving Barcelona supporters in Elche, which had already generated anger among sections of the club’s fanbase.

Thousands of Estelada flags were displayed inside Camp Nou during the Athletic match, while sections of the home support staged a vocal protest.

LaLiga subsequently documented several separate episodes in its match report, including chants heard before kick-off and again during the game.

The matter will now be considered by the RFEF Competition Committee and the Anti-Violence Commission, which will determine whether the reported behaviour breaches disciplinary regulations and whether Barcelona should face any sanction.

The filing itself does not mean the Catalan club has been punished, with a decision still to be made by the relevant bodies.

The controversy overshadowed what was otherwise an encouraging night for Hansi Flick’s side, who opened their home campaign with a comfortable victory.

Raphinha put Barcelona ahead in the first half before Fermin Lopez added a second late in the match to secure three points.

Barcelona now face the prospect of disciplinary proceedings while attempting to maintain their strong start to the LaLiga season.
