Pitso Mosimane reappointed as Bafana coach following Broos exit
Pitso Mosimane has officially returned as South Africa head coach, taking charge with the immediate task of guiding Bafana Bafana through the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
Pitso Mosimane is back in charge of South Africa, with the highly decorated coach beginning a new chapter with Bafana Bafana after the departure of Hugo Broos.
The 62-year-old was officially unveiled on Tuesday following weeks of negotiations with the South African Football Association, bringing an end to the uncertainty surrounding the national team’s next manager.
Mosimane previously led Bafana between 2010 and 2012, but his first permanent spell ended after South Africa failed to qualify for the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations following a costly misunderstanding over the qualification requirements in their final group match.
Much has changed since then, however, with Mosimane establishing himself as one of Africa’s most successful coaches through outstanding spells at Mamelodi Sundowns and Al Ahly.
He guided Sundowns to the 2016 CAF Champions League before winning the competition twice with Al Ahly in 2020 and 2021, making him a three-time continental champion.
His return comes at an important moment for South Africa, who must quickly shift their attention towards the 2027 AFCON qualifying campaign.
Bafana are in Group D alongside Guinea, Eritrea and Kenya, with Kenya already assured of a place at the tournament as co-hosts, leaving the remaining teams competing for one qualifying position.
Mosimane therefore faces immediate pressure to deliver, but his experience of African football and his record of winning major competitions give South Africa reason for optimism.
He inherits a side that reached the knockout stage of the 2026 World Cup under Broos and will now be expected to build on that progress while restoring Bafana’s status as a consistent force on the continent.
