Rodri rules himself out of Ballon d’Or race following Barcelona’s Yamal decision

Rodri appears to have ruled himself out of the 2026 Ballon d’Or race after Barcelona decided to back teammate Lamine Yamal for the prestigious award.

The Spanish midfielder acknowledged that the Catalan club believes Yamal is the player most deserving of the prize, insisting that their decision is “completely legitimate.”

Rodri, who won the Ballon d’Or in 2024 and was also one of the frontrunners for this year’s after winning the FIFA World Cup Player of the Tournament, also expressed his desire to see another Spanish player claim the honour.

With Barcelona throwing their support behind Lamine Yamal, Rodri’s comments suggest he does not expect the club to campaign for his own chances as he instead backs his younger compatriot.

The Midfielder moved to Barcelona from Manchester City in the summer, having already won two titles in England with the Carabao Cup and the FA Cup.
