Ajaka shines while Sotunbo and Latawa held in frustrating draws as Sagam Day Football Competition enters day 2
Ajaka FC stole the spotlight on day two with a 2-0 win over Ewuga, while Apele and Latawa, as well as Sotunbo and Seyindo, shared the points in their respective group openers.
The day two of the Sagam Day Football Competition saw three games go down, with Ajaka FC the only side to secure maximum points after a breathtaking performance against Ewuga, while Latawa, Apele, Sotunbo, and Seyindo all made away with a point each.
So far, the competition has produced seven goals from four games, after a 2-1 Igbobi FC victory over Ayanperuwa in the curtain raiser on Tuesday, while the trio of Sotunbo, Seyindo, and Ewuga have fired blanks in the opening rounds.
How things went on the second day
Apele and Latawa share the spoils
Apele FC kicked off their tournament in a 1-1 draw against Latawa FC amid the downpours at the Samagu High School football pitch after two second-half goals that saw them grab an equalizer after going behind.
Despite a dominant first half, Latawa were unable to turn possession into goals, asking not-so-difficult questions from their rivals’ goalkeeper and unable to fashion any clear-cut chances, but were most dangerous at set-pieces.
After a goalless first half, they eventually took a deserved lead moments after the restart, with right-back Segun arriving at the far post to fire home, with the goalkeeper already left for dead by the squared ball.
Momentum shifted immediately after the goal went in, and Apele started asking the questions as they desperately searched for an equalizer, which ultimately came in very awkward circumstances, as a dropped ball left the goalkeeper in no man’s land.
Taking advantage of the swamped goal area, Berbatov arrived late to turn in the strayed ball from close range, sealing a 1-1 scoreline as both sides settled for a point in their group opener.
Seyindo stood still against a dominant Sotunbo
There were no goals to cheer for the spectators in the second kickoff of the day, even as Sotunbo threatened in a dominant display, but Seyindo had just enough in them defensively to repel all the pressure as it finished nil-nil.
Ajaka too good for Ewuga
The game started on equal grounds, but Ajaka FC took a sudden lead in bizarre circumstances as the goalkeeper let an easy free-kick from Rasheed beat him from 25 yards out, undoing the good work of his team to stay in the game.
Ewuga stepped up their game in search of an equalizer, but Ajaka’s game management was so brilliant that they calmed the situation and got themselves back into the game until the half-time break.
Possession became evenly shared at the restart, and the Ajaka side took advantage of their opponents’ desperation for an equalizer to establish a cushion after a sloppy defensive display from the Ewuga team.
After an unconvincing clearance from the defender left the goalkeeper in no man’s land, the ball fell kindly to Ajaka FC’s Rashford, who doubled his team’s lead and killed off any hopes of a comeback.
It finished 2-0 to Ajaka, who moved to the summit of Group A, leading Igbobi FC on goal difference, while Ewuga assumed the bottom of the table. Meanwhile, Sotunbo and Seyindo are on a point apiece in Group B ahead of the meeting between Ipoyin Ade and Idado FC.
