Polish football has been left mourning after 20-year-old defender Oskar Kordus died following a freak road accident involving a deer.
The Kania Gostyn player was driving along the DW434 near Gostyn early on Monday morning when another vehicle struck a roe deer that had entered the road.
The force of the collision reportedly sent the animal into the opposite lane, where it crashed through the windscreen of Kordus’ approaching BMW. His vehicle subsequently left the road and overturned, leaving the young footballer critically injured.
Emergency responders initially found him without vital signs and began resuscitation before successfully restoring his vital functions. Kordus was then flown by helicopter to a hospital in Poznan, where he later died despite medical efforts.
Polish authorities confirmed that the other driver involved in the incident escaped without injury, while an investigation into the circumstances of the crash is continuing.
Kordus had joined fourth-tier club Kania Gostyn from Korona Piaski ahead of the current campaign and had already made seven league appearances this season.
He had previously featured 26 times for Korona Piaski during the previous season and came through the youth systems of Zaglebie Lubin and Warta Poznan.
Kania Gostyn announced his death with a tribute expressing profound sadness and disbelief, while Korona Piaski also remembered the player as someone who had developed through its academy from an early age.
The tragedy has sent shockwaves through the local football community, with both clubs extending condolences to Kordus’ family, friends and loved ones as investigations into the fatal accident continue.
