Austria overcomes spirited Jordan for first FIFA World Cup win in 36 years
Austria secured a historic 3-1 victory over tournament debutants Jordan in their Group J opener, marking the nation’s first FIFA World Cup match win in thirty-six years.
Ralf Rangnick’s Austria made a triumphant, long-awaited return to the global stage, defeating tournament debutants Jordan 3-1 at the San Francisco Bay Area Stadium.
Romano Schmid opened the scoring with a brilliant 21st-minute strike from outside the area, but a resilient Jordanian side struck back early in the second half through Ali Olwan, registering their country’s first-ever World Cup goal.
The decisive breakthrough came in the 76th minute when an unfortunate own goal from Jordan’s Yazan Al-Arab restored the Austrian lead.
Veteran forward Marko Arnautović then sealed the emotional three points deep into stoppage time, converting a VAR-awarded penalty in the 102nd minute to confirm Austria’s first FIFA World Cup tournament victory since defeating the United States back in 1990.
