Barcelona plans to revisit Julian Alvarez deal in 2027
Barcelona have reportedly kept their long-term plan for Julian Alvarez alive despite Atletico Madrid blocking a summer move.
Barcelona have reportedly retained their ambition to sign Julian Alvarez despite failing to prise the Argentina international away from Atletico Madrid during the summer window.
The Catalan giants spent much of the transfer period exploring a deal for the 26-year-old, but Atletico repeatedly made it clear they were unwilling to negotiate, with president Joan Laporta later confirming Barcelona’s strong interest.
Rather than continue chasing a deal that could not be completed, Barcelona turned to Gabriel Jesus, completing a reported €10 million move from Arsenal to strengthen Hansi Flick’s attacking options.
However, Jesus’ arrival does not appear to have ended the club’s interest in Alvarez. According to a fresh report from El Larguero, Barcelona have already begun looking beyond the current window, with January and, more realistically, June 2027 being considered for another attempt.
The club reportedly views Alvarez as the preferred long-term centre-forward and has been reluctant to commit significant funds to alternative targets. That stance is understandable given the Argentine’s quality and his importance to Atletico since arriving from Manchester City in 2024.
Alvarez has reportedly scored 49 goals in 107 appearances for the Madrid club, establishing himself as one of La Liga’s leading forwards. Barcelona’s immediate solution may therefore be Jesus, but Alvarez remains the bigger project.
Atletico’s firm resistance means any future approach could prove complicated, particularly after the breakdown in relations between the two clubs.
For now, Barcelona appear prepared to wait, with the striker’s future likely to remain one of the biggest transfer stories heading into 2027.
