Ghana opened their 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations campaign with a convincing 2-0 victory over debutants Cape Verde, who finished the match with 10 players after Diana Borges’ late red card.

Doris Boaduwaa set the tone after opening the scoring early from a Portia Boakye assist before Eleia Vieira inadvertently doubled the Black Queens’ advantage with the tournament’s first own goal so far.

Cape Verde’s difficult evening worsened deep into stoppage time when Diana Borges was shown a straight red card in the 92nd minute, leaving the newcomers to finish the match with 10 players as Ghana secured all three points and made a winning start to their bid for continental success.

Ghana move to the summit of Group C, where they are heavily favoured to progress, while Cameroon and Mali face off in the other group game later in the day.
