BREAKING: Portugal suspend Cristiano Ronaldo pending final verdict on disciplinary case
Cristiano Ronaldo has been provisionally suspended by the Portuguese Football Federation after disciplinary proceedings were opened over an incident on October 7, with a final decision still pending.
Cristiano Ronaldo has been provisionally suspended by the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) after the governing body opened disciplinary proceedings over his departure from the national team camp, with a final verdict yet to be delivered.
The federation’s Disciplinary Council confirmed the decision on Saturday, October 10, after initiating proceedings a day earlier to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident involving Portugal’s captain.
The case has been classified as urgent, while Ronaldo will remain under provisional suspension until the disciplinary process reaches its conclusion.
Portuguese FA issues official statement
The FPF said its Non-Professional Section had approved the disciplinary proceedings on October 9 to establish whether the reported events constituted a breach of its regulations.
“The initiation of disciplinary proceedings against Cristiano Ronaldo, by deliberation of the Non-Professional Section, of October 9, 2026, with the purpose of the investigation of any disciplinary relevance of the facts participated on October 7”.
“Without prejudice to the automatic preventive suspension to which he was subject until the date of establishment, the non-automatic preventive suspension of the player was determined and the urgent nature was attributed to the process”.
The case has since been referred to the federation’s Disciplinary Investigation Committee. The investigation will determine whether further sanctions are warranted, although the federation has not announced a final punishment.
Dispute with Jorge Jesus preceded Ronaldo’s departure
The disciplinary action follows Ronaldo’s decision to leave Portugal’s training camp in Copenhagen after a disagreement involving head coach Jorge Jesus.
The 41-year-old forward was left on the bench during Portugal’s match against Norway, despite reportedly expecting to feature for around 30 minutes. Ronaldo subsequently expressed frustration over what he described as a broken promise and criticised the handling of the situation.
His departure from the camp ahead of Portugal’s subsequent fixture against Denmark intensified the controversy surrounding his relationship with the national team setup.
Ronaldo later addressed the incident publicly, apologising for his conduct and acknowledging that his position as captain carried additional responsibility.
The Al-Nassr forward also indicated that he was prepared to accept disciplinary consequences for his actions, making clear that he did not consider himself exempt from punishment because of his status in Portuguese football.
Final verdict still pending
Ronaldo’s provisional suspension does not represent a final ruling on the case. The ongoing proceedings will determine whether he faces an additional ban or other disciplinary measures.
The veteran striker has also indicated his willingness to continue representing Portugal after serving any punishment imposed, leaving his international future open despite the latest setback.
The outcome could have implications for Portugal’s preparations for upcoming international fixtures, depending on the duration and scope of any eventual sanction.
For now, the federation’s decision places one of the country’s most prominent footballers under formal disciplinary scrutiny, with the final outcome dependent on the investigation.
