Chelsea ownership shake-up looms as Boehly and Walter discuss stake sale and exit
Chelsea could be heading towards a major ownership reshuffle as Todd Boehly and Mark Walter explore selling their stakes to majority shareholder Clearlake Capital.
Todd Boehly and Mark Walter are discussing the sale of their Chelsea stakes to Clearlake Capital, potentially bringing an end to the long-running tensions within the club’s ownership structure.
According to reports, negotiations have gained momentum, with Chelsea’s market value understood to be above £5 billion.
The Financial Times also reported that the discussions could resolve years of disagreement between the two sides of the consortium that acquired Chelsea in 2022.
Clearlake currently holds more than 60 per cent of the club but shares governance with Boehly’s group, creating an unusual structure in which the majority shareholder does not have complete control.
A successful transaction would significantly alter that arrangement and could give Clearlake much greater authority over the Premier League club.
Strategic Differences Behind Potential Exit
The discussions appear to have deeper roots than a simple financial transaction. Boehly and Clearlake have reportedly differed over Chelsea’s long-term direction, including recruitment, the club’s multi-team structure and stadium development.
Boehly has generally placed emphasis on growing Chelsea’s global brand, commercial reach and matchday revenues, while Clearlake has pursued a broader multi-club model through BlueCo, which also includes Strasbourg.
Those differences have contributed to friction since the takeover, although both parties have publicly remained committed to the club.
Boehly’s Chelsea Role Already Set to Change
The potential sale comes at a significant moment for Boehly, who is expected to step down as Chelsea chairman at the end of the current season under the original ownership arrangement.
The American businessman and Walter were part of the consortium that bought Chelsea from Roman Abramovich in 2022, with the deal initially creating a shared-control structure.
Clearlake’s potential acquisition of their shares would simplify the ownership hierarchy and could eventually give the investment firm control over both sporting and infrastructure decisions.
Walter’s position has also attracted attention following his recent agreement to sell the Los Angeles Lakers for $12.5 billion and wider scrutiny surrounding his business interests.
However, no agreement has yet been reached, and Chelsea’s ownership situation could still change before any formal transaction is completed.
For now, the talks represent one of the most significant developments in the club’s boardroom since the post-Abramovich takeover.
