Enzo Maresca reveals why £450m summer spend was necessary at Man City
Enzo Maresca says Manchester City’s huge summer investment was necessary to build the squad depth required to challenge Arsenal for the Premier League title.
Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca has defended the club’s extraordinary summer spending, insisting the major rebuild was necessary to keep pace with Arsenal in the Premier League title race.
The Cityzens spent around £458 million during the transfer window, with the late arrivals of Enzo Fernandez and Iliman Ndiaye taking the club’s recruitment drive to another level.
Maresca made the comments after City maintained their perfect league start with a 1-0 victory over Coventry City, a result secured by Erling Haaland’s goal.
The former Chelsea boss pointed to Arsenal’s strength in depth as evidence that his own squad needed significant reinforcement, particularly with the Gunners able to rotate heavily without weakening their team.
“In the end, if you want to be there you need options,” Maresca said, stressing that Arsenal have built enough quality to change several players between matches.
City’s overhaul has already delivered three league wins, although their performances will face a bigger examination as the campaign progresses.
Fernandez, who arrived from Chelsea for a British-record-equalling £125 million, made his debut against Coventry after Nico O’Reilly suffered a warm-up injury.
Maresca will now expect his expensive additions to strengthen a side attempting to close the gap on reigning champions Arsenal, with the pressure increasing alongside the scale of City’s investment.
