Ezri Konsa completes £51M Arsenal switch ahead of PL opener
Arsenal have completed the signing of England defender Ezri Konsa from Aston Villa for a reported £51 million, adding further depth and versatility to Mikel Arteta’s defence.
Arsenal have completed the signing of England international Ezri Konsa from Aston Villa in a deal worth a reported £51 million, giving Mikel Arteta another experienced option as the Premier League champions begin their title defence.
The 28-year-old defender has agreed a long-term contract and will wear the number 15 shirt after ending a seven-year spell at Villa Park, where he established himself as one of the league’s most dependable defenders.
Konsa’s arrival is particularly significant for Arsenal because of defensive concerns surrounding William Saliba and Jurrien Timber, with his ability to operate both at centre-back and right-back offering Arteta additional flexibility.
The former Charlton and Brentford player made more than 200 Premier League appearances for Villa and was part of the club’s successful campaign last season.
He also played a prominent role for England during the 2026 World Cup after making his senior international debut in 2023.
Arsenal had been pursuing defensive reinforcements throughout the summer and previously considered other options before settling on Konsa, whose combination of athleticism, composure and positional versatility fitted the profile Arteta wanted.
The transfer also represents a major move for Villa, who had initially valued their defender closer to £60 million before reaching an agreement with Arsenal.
Konsa now joins an Arsenal squad seeking to build on last season’s title success and compete across several fronts, with his Premier League experience expected to be valuable during a demanding campaign.
He signs a four-year contract until the summer of 2030 with the option of one more, and Arsenal will hope the deal will be worth it for the most expensive 28-year-old defender in history.
