Ismael Koné’s World Cup over as Canadan star set for lengthy spell on the sideline following broken leg
Canadian midfielder Ismaël Koné is set to miss the remainder of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after suffering severe fibula and tibia fractures during a group stage match against Qatar.
Canada’s historic World Cup campaign has suffered a devastating blow following confirmation that midfielder Ismaël Koné sustained fractured fibula and tibia injuries during Thursday’s match against Qatar.
The 24-year-old was stretchered off the pitch at BC Place in the 51st minute following a severe challenge. Head coach Jesse Marsch later revealed the touchline staff could audibly hear the bone snap.
Koné has been admitted to a local hospital where he is currently being supported by his mother, Suzanne, ahead of mandatory corrective surgery.
The extensive recovery period for the dual fractures is estimated at four to five months, officially ruling him out for the remainder of the tournament.
In a show of sportsmanship, Qatari midfielder Assim Madibo visited the Canadian dressing room to personally apologize for the tackle.
