Libya sets sights on hosting AFCON 2028 or 2032

Libya is planning a bid to host the Africa Cup of Nations in 2028 or 2032, using eight stadiums led by Tripoli and Benghazi’s international venues, more than four decades after it last staged the tournament.

Libya is preparing a bid to host the Africa Cup of Nations in either 2028 or 2032, planning to use eight stadiums across the country, with Tripoli International Stadium (45,000 capacity) and Benghazi International Stadium (40,000 capacity) serving as flagship venues.

Both stadiums have undergone major renovations in recent years, with Benghazi reopening in 2025 after 16 years of closure.

Libya previously hosted AFCON in 1982, finishing as runners-up to Ghana, and was also awarded the 2017 tournament before it was relocated to Gabon over security concerns.

CAF opened bidding for the 2028, 2032 and 2036 editions in December 2025, with Ethiopia, Morocco, and a joint Southern African bid already confirmed as official 2028 contenders.
