Mikel Arteta joins fastest Premier League managers to reach 150 wins
Mikel Arteta became only the fifth manager to reach 150 Premier League victories in fewer than 250 matches after Arsenal defeated Coventry City 3-0.
Mikel Arteta reached another significant milestone in his Arsenal career on Friday night as the Spaniard recorded his 150th Premier League victory in the Gunners’ 3-0 win over Coventry City.
The result moved Arteta into an exclusive group of managers who have reached the landmark in fewer than 250 matches, underlining the remarkable consistency he has established since taking charge of Arsenal in December 2019.
Arteta achieved the feat in his 249th Premier League game, making him the fifth-fastest manager in competition history to reach 150 victories.
Only Pep Guardiola, Jose Mourinho, Jurgen Klopp and Sir Alex Ferguson reached the mark in fewer matches. Guardiola leads the way after needing just 204 games, followed by Mourinho on 231, Klopp on 237 and Ferguson on 247.
Arteta’s achievement is particularly notable given the difficult rebuilding process he inherited when he arrived at the Emirates, with Arsenal having endured a period of inconsistency before his appointment.
The milestone comes at the beginning of what could become another historic campaign for the Spanish tactician and his Arsenal team.
The Gunners entered the new season as reigning Premier League champions after ending a 22-year wait for the title last season, with the Spaniard becoming the 13th manager to win the competition.
Arsenal have now opened their title defence in emphatic fashion, with Kai Havertz, Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard finding the net against Coventry as Arteta’s side immediately demonstrated their intent to challenge for another championship.
The victory also extended Arsenal’s unbeaten home record against newly promoted sides to 46 Premier League matches, according to the Guardian.
Arteta’s rise from Pep Guardiola’s assistant at Manchester City to one of the Premier League’s most successful active managers has been rapid.
He is now the division’s longest-serving manager and has added a Premier League title to the one FA Cup he previously won with Arsenal as a coach, plus three Community Shield titles.
With 150 league victories already secured, Arteta now has another elite benchmark within reach as he attempts to establish Arsenal among the dominant forces of English football.
