Newcastle United agrees £50m deal for Man City midfielder Nico Gonzalez
Newcastle United are closing in on the signing of Manchester City midfielder Nico Gonzalez after reportedly agreeing a deal worth up to £50 million.
Newcastle United have reached a verbal agreement with Manchester City to sign Nico Gonzalez in a move that could significantly strengthen their midfield ahead of the new Premier League campaign.
The deal, reported by Fabrizio Romano, is understood to be worth £50 million, with Newcastle set to pay £47m initially and a further £3m in potential add-ons.
Recent reports had already revealed that City were prepared to allow the 24-year-old to leave after he struggled to establish himself as a regular starter.
Gonzalez joined Manchester City from Porto in January 2025 and has since made 59 appearances for the club, although his opportunities became increasingly limited as competition for midfield places intensified.
His possible departure comes as City continue reshaping their midfield under new manager Enzo Maresca following Rodri’s move to Barcelona and Tijjani Reijnders’ transfer to Al-Qadsiah.
For Newcastle, the move would provide valuable experience to a midfield that has undergone major changes this summer.
The Magpies have already lost key figures including Bruno Guimarães and Sandro Tonali and have been searching for an established midfielder capable of immediately contributing at St James’ Park.
Gonzalez, who developed at Barcelona’s La Masia academy before moving through Valencia and Porto, could now be handed a more prominent role under Matthias Jaissle.
Reports indicate that the Spaniard has given the green light to the proposed move and is expected to travel to Newcastle as the clubs work towards completing the transfer.
