Chaos erupted in the Paddington area late Thursday night following France’s 2-0 World Cup quarter-final victory over Morocco, as large crowds gathered, waved flags, blocked passing traffic, and climbed onto stationary vehicles.
Riot squads equipped with helmets and protective shields quickly deployed to contain the volatile crowd as the situation rapidly escalated.
Disgruntled fans launched fireworks and hurled glass bottles at police lines, striking one officer in the head. Authorities made four arrests for violent disorder before successfully dispersing the crowd and reopening the thoroughfare around 1:00 AM.
